A legendary golf club in the far north of Scotland

For golf lovers staying with us at Mackays Hotel in Wick, the spectacular Royal Dornoch Golf Club is not too far away. Approximately 1.5 hours drive from our hotel, this world-famous course is certainly worth the trip. Visitors are welcome, however, we recommend you book in advance as tee times are very much in demand! In addition to the Championship Course, the club also has another 18-hole course called the Struie Course. Both are bookable online.

The courses

The Championship Course at Royal Dornoch is frequently ranked amongst the best in the world. With stunning views of the Dornoch Firth, this course is on many a golfer’s bucket list. Golf has been played there since the 1600s and the club was later established in 1877. Updated and extended by Old Tom Morris, Scottish golfer and course designer, in the 1880s, this 18-hole links course has a wild and natural look, with plenty of challenges for any level of player. The Struie Course dates from 1923, and is often referred to as the “low course”. And while it may sometimes be overshadowed by its more famous counterpart, it is still very scenic, uniquely challenging and ranked highly in Scotland.

We stayed here as part of our NC500 tour. A very nice hotel with rooms obviously quite recently redecorated. A very large bed, and a decent sized bathroom to boot. The food was lovely too and even their Covid one way system wasn’t too much of a problem. They have a couple of car chargers in their off street car park which are free to use, just ask at reception

The prestigious golf club has its own clubhouse with bar and lounge, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or delicious meal. The pro shop, stocks a wide range of products and golf brands.

Exploring Dornoch

The town of Dornoch in Scotland is most famous for its renowned golf club. However, the town itself is also great to visit during your stay with us. It has beautiful sandy beaches, a magnificent cathedral and lots of history. Top attractions nearby include the Historylinks Museum, Dornoch Beach, Dornoch Cathedral, Loch Fleet Nature Reserve and Dunrobin Castle.
